Friedensreich Hundertwasser
was born in Vienna in 1928 as Friedrich Stowasser. He is regarded as one of the most significant Austrian artists of the 20th century. He became famous for his vibrantly coloured paintings, organic forms and his extraordinary architecture. Hundertwasser rejected straight lines and sought to combine art and nature. Among his best-known buildings are the Hundertwasser House and the KunstHausWien. Major collections of his works can be found at the KunstHausWien, the Albertina, the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna and the Hundertwasser Museum, amongst others. Internationally, his works are also held at the Centre Pompidou, the MoMA and in several private collections across Europe and Japan. In addition to his art, Hundertwasser was deeply committed to environmental and nature conservation. He died on 19 February 2000 near Brisbane on board a ship en route to Europe.
